Everyone liked Doug, he was just a really likable guy, but I too seen a fight,,,,,I guess he liked to fight.  Doug wasn't a mean guy.  One night he and Larry Brown also his good friend went at it,,,,there was about 5 of us there and beer was a factor.   It didn't last long but I was surprised how quick two best freinds tore into each other.

I remember Douglas as kind of a gentle giant. Pretty quiet but I knew I didn't want to make him mad. I did see him drunk a few times and he had a smile that just didn't quit.

Ira, I think the last game of the season you were referring to was with Skyline. If you remember how big they were due to the aggressive procurement program of recruiting players outside school boundaries. Anyway, they were undefeated in fact, no team ever scored on them until we played them. I remember we scored two touchdowns on them but, one was called back. I was charged by the official for “clipping” which called the last touchdown back. I was furious because I was clearly in front of the player. Coach Glenn Rupp saw the whole thing and reassured me I didn’t clip the player nor did I screw up. Doug Maxwell came over to me, put his arm on my shoulder and said I was right in front of him and it was a very crappy (he used another word) call. It still really upset me and why I remember it so vividly because we would have won the game! This is why when the fight started I was a very enthusiastic participant!  I tore into the biggest player I could find and knocked him down. I then went and helped Dave Bailey because he was involving himself with two Skyline guys. We all had a good laugh and enjoyed the extra circular activity. As I recall, it was Dave Anglesey that started it by taking off his helmet and hitting a Skyline player with it for some remark he made about Anglesey or Cyprus.  You may be right as to who started it. It could have been Doug because I didn’t know exactly where he was.  What a way to end the season!  BooYa!

Another time, Doug asked me to double date with him to one of the formal dances. So, Doug and his date, Terri Madill and myself went to the dance. After the dance, we found ourselves on Cemetery Hill watching the lights etc.. We were there for a while; the windows were all steamed up when a knock came to the window.  It was a county sheriff checking on us with a real bright flashlight. It was quite embarrassing because the sheriff knew Terri's father. We tried to explain the steamed up windows but, I don't think he believed us.

I enjoyed my association with Doug and treasured the many memories we shared together.  I was sad to see that he had passed. He was a good friend to all and a good man to have on your side. He will be missed.

I don't know who Doug was, but is all you remember about school is having fights?

I remember Song and Yell and how fun to compete against the other classes and winning. Or watching the swim team win state.

Oh well, boys will be boys.

Hope to see you all at reunion.

Some people were not into song and yell, debate, etc, etc. Doug was a down to earth guy. It just so happens some people seem to get into a few fights, even though that was not there intention. I will say in the day, that I had quite a good time with Doug and a whole lot of other freinds, drinking, chasing the girls, dragging main street in Magna, Kearns, Toole, and State Street in Salt Lake. So my conclusion is it was not all about FIGHTING,it just happens sometime.

So right Richard. there was a lot to Doug besides fighting. As Gay said, he was a gentle giant. I guess the fights were what broke up the monotony of day to day school work so they stand out in our memories. But I liked Doug and Dave both  very much.

Doug, and I went into the same machine shop class at the old Trade Tech.

We started 2 days after we graduated from Cyprus. We went to work for Sperry, in the machine shop

at North Salt Lake. I got drafted, and when I got home he had transfered to a different department.

So I never worked with him again.

I din't mean to cause any controversy when I mentioned the football incident.  It was just one of those memorable moments that we shared at C.H.S.  I don't think that Doug was known especially for his fighting. On the contrary.  Those of us that knew him, liked him.  He was a very interesting person, and added color and character to our experiences at Cyprus.  In fact we all added to each others experience and knowledge.  I am greatful for having known Doug, and all the other Pirates that came into my life while I was a student at Cyprus.  Thanks to all of you for those memories.

I remember Doug and seeing him and Dave Anglesey and always thought they remained me off Mutt and Jeff!   Doug so tall and Dave kind of small In stature!   These guys were great and it is so fun to remember all the kids that were in our class, so many have passed and I think we are all glad we are still here to remember the little things as well as the big events!   I think as a Sophmore the one thing I disliked the most was big and Little Brother and Sister day!  Glad they did away with that!   Oh so many memories to bring us all together, and Rick really Cemetery Hill, just watching the lights, ok we all went there one time or another and we all watched the LIGHTS!!    HA! HA!   Terry and I were good friends, think I remember her talking abouth that, love it!
